Procedures
Transmission Shifter - Installation
- Install shifter assembly onto the shifter assembly studs on the floor pan.
- Install the nuts to hold the shifter assembly onto the floor pan. Tighten nuts to 9.6 Nm (85 in.lbs.).
- Place the floor shifter lever in PARK position.
- Loosen the adjustment screw on the gearshift cable.
- Install the gearshift cable to the shift lever pin.
- Install the park lock cable to the shift mechanism cam and the notch in the shifter assembly.
- Verify that the key is in the LOCK (1) position and remains there until the cable is fully adjusted.
- Verify that the park lock cable adjustment tab is pulled upward to the unlocked position.
- Install the wiring harness connectors to the shifter assembly.
- Verify that the shift lever is in the PARK position.
- Tighten the shift cable adjustment screw to 7 Nm (65 in.lbs.).
- Verify that the key in the LOCK (1) position and the shifter is in PARK.
- Push downward on the park lock cable adjustment tab to lock the adjustment.
- Verify correct shifter, park lock, and BTSI operation
- Install any console parts removed for access to shift lever assembly and shift cables.
Transmission Shifter - Removal

- Remove any necessary console parts for access to shift lever assembly and shifter cables
- Shift transmission into PARK.
- Disconnect the transmission shift cable at shift lever and shifter assembly bracket.
- Verify the key is in LOCK (1) position and disconnect the park-interlock cable from the shifter lever and the shifter assembly bracket.
- Disengage all wiring connectors from the shifter assembly.
- Remove all nuts holding the shifter assembly to the floor pan.
- Remove the shifter assembly from the vehicle.
Transmission Shifter - Operation
OPERATION MANUAL LOW (1) range provides first gear only. Overrun braking is also provided in this range. MANUAL SECOND (2) range provides first and second gear only. DRIVE range provides FIRST, SECOND THIRD and OVERDRIVE FOURTH gear ranges. The shift into OVERDRIVE FOURTH gear range occurs only after the transmission has completed the shift into D THIRD gear range. No further movement of the shift mechanism is required to complete the 3-4 shift. The FOURTH gear upshift occurs automatically when the overdrive selector switch is in the ON position. No upshift to FOURTH gear will occur if any of the following are true: -The transmission fluid temperature is below 10° C (50° F) or above 121° C (250° F). -The shift to THIRD is not yet complete. -Vehicle speed is too low for the 3-4 shift to occur. Upshifts into FOURTH will be delayed when the transmission fluid temperature is below 4.5° C (40° F) or above 115.5° C (240° F).
Transmission Shifter - Description
DESCRIPTION The automatic transmission is operated with the help of a shift lever assembly (SLA) located in the floor console. There are six positions to which the selection lever can be shifted: Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, Manual Second, Manual Low. The selector lever positions ""P"", ""R"", ""N"" ""D"" ""2"" and ""1"" are transmitted by a shift cable to the selector shaft in the transmission, indication in cluster. -Park (P) -Reverse (R) -Neutral (N) -Drive (D) -Manual second (2) -Manual low (1) The SLA is comprised of the following functions. Key lock Depending on the selector lever position, the ignition cylinder is locked/unlocked, i.e., the ignition key can be removed only if the selector lever is in position "P", and the shift lever can be moved out of "P" only after the key has been turned clockwise from LOCK (1) position. A park lock cable is used to perform this functions. Park lock The selector lever is not released from position "P" until the brake pedal has been applied and the ignition key is in ON (3) position. Shift lock is controlled by the brake light switch in conjunction with a locking solenoid in the SLA. As soon as the brake pedal is applied, the locking solenoid is energized and retracted to unlock the selector lever. If the selector lever cannot be moved out of position "P" due to a malfunction, the shift lock function can be overridden.
