Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint
ℹ NOTE
The dial indicator plunger must be perpendicular to the machined surface of the steering knuckle.- Raise the front of the vehicle. Place safety floor stands under both lower control arms as far outboard as possible. Lower the vehicle to allow the stands to support some or all of the vehicle weight.
- Mount a dial indicator solidly to the topside of the lower control arm.
- Position the indicator plunger against the bottom surface of the steering knuckle and then zero the dial indicator.
- Position a pry bar under the tire assembly. Pry upward on the tire assembly.
- If the travel exceeds 0.5 mm (0.020 in.), replace the lower ball joint Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint - Removal.
Front Suspension Upper Ball Joint
ℹ NOTE
Use care not to pry on or tear the ball joint boot, when checking the free play.
- Raise and support the vehicle.
- Remove the front tire and wheel.
- Support the outside of the lower control arm with a suitable holding fixture, and raise to normal ride height.
- Install three lug nuts (4) and tighten enough to stabilize the rotor (3) to the hub.
- Mount a dial indicator base solidly to the rotor.
- Position the dial indicator gage (2) plunger on the topside of the upper control arm (1) directly above the ball joint, and then zero the dial indicator (2).
- Position a pry bar between the steering knuckle (5) and the upper control arm (1). Pry upwards on the upper control arm (1).
- If the travel exceeds 0.5 mm (0.020 in.), replace the upper control arm Front Upper Control Arm - Removal.
- If the upper ball joint is below specifications remove the three lug nuts and install the front tire and wheel Service and Repair.
